What is the Menopause?

Menopause means “ending monthly cycles” and is a natural biological process that marks the change towards the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Menopause is a natural transition that all women go through, and with the right support, it can be an empowering time of life.

Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but the timing can vary widely. It is defined by the absence of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months, signaling the cessation of ovarian hormone production. The hormonal shifts during menopause, particularly the decline in oestrogen and progesterone, can lead to a range of symptoms that impact a woman’s quality of life.

Menopause Symptoms

While menopause is a normal part of life, it affects women in varying ways and the severity of symptoms is also dependant on each individual. Some women may experience more severe symptoms that interfere with their quality of life. For these women, menopause can be a difficult time.

When should you seek help for menopause and how do you access our services?

Though mood swings and other physiological changes may be normal, it is always a good idea to contact a doctor if you find yourself frequently ill or unable to go to work. During the menopause, some women experience greater difficulty than others.

You can refer yourself to our menopause clinic. During the initial consultation, you will talk with our medical lead, who will suggest referrals to other specialists if needed and also liaise with your GP if and as required.

How do we support you during Menopause?

Your Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, your medical practitioner will listen carefully to you, go through a comprehensive questionnaire with you, do a physical examination, take bloods (if needed) for your tests and discuss the programme with you.

Your Blood Tests

We have partnered with the lab of an NHS trust for all our medical blood tests and your test will be tailored to get the information we need, based on your consultation. The results will take around a week to get and they will inform our report and recommendations for us to discuss with you in your second part of your consultation to agree your treatment plan.

Your Personalised Treatment Plan

After your consultation and carrying out any necessary tests, our practitioner will carefully select a treatment plan, based on your specific symptoms and concerns. Our Menopause Clinic team are highly trained and qualified to recommend further treatments and prescribe medications.

Your Follow Up Review Appointments

As a client of Vie Aesthetics and our Menopause Clinic, your care is important to us. That’s why we always offer free review appointments to all of our clients, no matter the treatment.

Meet the Team!

Nicola Wookey is the newest member of our world-class Medical Team. She started her career as a Naval Nurse in the Royal Navy before joining the NHS in the Rapid Response Team as a Senior Nurse. After 8 years as a full-time Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Nicola turned her expertise to Aesthetic Medicine. She has joined us at Vie Aesthetics to work alongside Dr Liakas in our Menopause Clinic as well as the Medical Weight Management Clinic. Nicola is also a skilled aesthetic practitioner, offering injectables, such as Anti Wrinkle, LanlumaX non-surgical bum lift, LanlumaX cellulite treatments, all Dermal Fillers, Microsclerotherapy for Spider vein removal, ear microsuction and IV Vitamin infusions.

Does HRT have side effects? How long does it take to work?

The advantages of HRT often take a few weeks to become apparent and up to three months to fully experience the results. Your body may need some time to adjust to HRT and may experience a few side effects in the beginning. Examples include leg cramps, feeling sick and tender breasts. Usually, these side effects go away after 6 to 8 weeks.

But HRT may not be suitable if you:

have a history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer or womb cancer
have a history of blood clots – you may need to use patches or gels rather than tablets
have untreated high blood pressure – your blood pressure will need to be controlled before you can start HRT
have liver disease
are pregnant – it’s still possible to get pregnant while taking HRT, so it’s important to use contraception until 2 years after your last period if you’re under 50, or for 1 year after the age of 50

If any of these apply to you, alternatives to HRT may be recommended instead.
