What is Dyspareunia? Causes & Symptoms

What is Dyspareunia?

Dyspareunia is a medical condition where people experience persistent or recurrent pain during sexual intercourse. It can affect both men and women and can make intimate relationships difficult.

What are The Causes of Dyspareunia?

1. Physical Causes: Dyspareunia can result from various physical factors, such as vaginal dryness, vaginal infections, genital abnormalities, scar tissue from surgeries or trauma, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. In men, causes may include penile infections, foreskin problems, and Peyronie’s disease.

2. Psychological Causes: Emotional factors like anxiety, depression, stress, history of sexual abuse, relationship problems, and negative beliefs about sex can contribute to dyspareunia. Psychological factors can also amplify pain sensations and make the experience more distressing.

What are the Symptoms of Dyspareunia?

1. Pain during intercourse: The most prominent symptom of dyspareunia is pain during penetration, ranging from mild discomfort to severe burning, stinging, or tearing sensations. The pain may occur at specific locations, such as the entry of the vagina or deep within the pelvis.

2. Pre-sex pain: Some individuals with dyspareunia experience pain even before any attempts at penetration, which can be caused by anticipation, muscle tension, or hypersensitivity.

3. Post-sex pain: Following intercourse, individuals may continue to experience pain, which can range from mild to severe. This pain may persist for hours or even days.

What Treaments can help with Dyspareunia?

1. Medical Interventions: Depending on the underlying cause, medical treatments may be recommended. These can include hormone therapy, topical oestrogen creams, antifungal or antibiotic medications for infections, and surgical interventions to address anatomical abnormalities or scar tissue.

2. Psychological Therapy: When psychological factors contribute to dyspareunia, therapy approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapy, or sex therapy may be beneficial. These therapies can help individuals address underlying emotional issues, reduce anxiety, and develop coping strategies.

3. Lubricants and Moisturisers: For individuals experiencing vaginal dryness, the use of water-based lubricants during intercourse can help alleviate discomfort. Additionally, regular use of vaginal moisturizers can improve vaginal tissue hydration and elasticity.

4. Pelvic Floor Therapy: Physical therapy focused on the pelvic floor muscles can be beneficial for both men and women with dyspareunia. Techniques such as pelvic floor muscle relaxation exercises, biofeedback, and trigger point release can help reduce pain and improve sexual function.

5. Communication and Education: Open and honest communication with a healthcare professional and partner is essential in addressing dyspareunia. Educating oneself about the condition and exploring sexual techniques that minimize pain can help individuals and their partners navigate intimacy more comfortably.

Remember, dyspareunia is a treatable condition. If you’re experiencing pain during sex, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to identify the cause and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Please note that results vary from person to person due to lifestyle, external and internal factors, and genetic predispositions.
