Time to talk: Stress Awareness Week

This week is Stress Awareness Week and it’s time to talk… Here at Vie Aesthetics we promote celebrating the beauty of life, that includes a totally holistic approach to 360º wellness including weight management, nutrition and life coaching services. To help prompt more conversation about the many ways that stress can impact our lives and how we can handle it, our Life Coach Anna Kesanli offers her insight and advice when it comes to feeling stressed.

Acknowledging Stress

Stress has  a powerful impact on various aspects of your life—not only can it affect your mood, energy level, relationships, and work performance, stress can also cause and exacerbate a wide variety of health conditions. Acknowledging that you feel stressed and taking action to cope with it is the only way to live cohesively alongside moments of stress. Becoming aware of our emotions and behaviours requires a lot of effort but once accomplished it allows us to accept that feeling and that’s when we are ready to take action to tackle it.

Stress is our body’s natural response to feeling pressure or not being able to cope. Stress is not age related, as children, teens and adults can experience it.

Why do we need to talk about Stress?

Although being a natural response, stress can be detrimental by affecting our personal and interpersonal lives. Our energy level, mood, motivation, performance and relationships can be affected when stress is not acknowledged.

Signs of Stress

Over the years, people have become accustomed to living with stress by normalising it in their work and personal life. Some people believe that if they are not feeling the symtoms of stress, they are doing something wrong.

The signs and the negative effects of stress are both psychological and physiological:

  • Higher blood pressure
  • Chronic pain
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia and problems with memory and concentration
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling unmotivated.

Mood changes are also very common, the following signs could also be observed:

  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • The need for isolation

Our bodies experience the same chemical reactions from stress both in positive and negative circumstances, what changes is the longevity of that response and our mentality towards it. Chronic stress should always be addressed by a professional through counselling or psychotherapy.

All of the above accentuate the importance of acknowledging and developing coping strategies for stress.

Coping with Stress

There are many ways to help yourself and others to cope with stress in their everyday lives.

  • Exercising
Physical exercise is one of the best stress reliefs. Pick an activity that is suitable and enjoyable for you and sweat it out.
  • Mindfulness
Integrating mindfulness practice into your bedtime routine can help you calm your mind and get ready for rest. Add your mindfulness sessions or meditations to your sleep journal. After a while, you may start to notice a correlation between winding down your mind and getting a solid night’s sleep. There are many apps that offer meditation and relaxation exercises.
  • Reward
Reward yourself for your achievements, whether big or small. For tasks you have completed and goals you have met!
  • Talk
Opening up to your closes friends and family members can also help relieve stress, but putting things into perspective and realising what is really important. It can equally be more useful to speak to an external party, somebody who doesn’t know you so that you can truly express how you are feeling.
