A GUIDE TO WINTER SKINCARE

HOW SHOULD YOUR SELF-CARE CHANGE DURING THE COLDER MONTHS?

Many of us cannot wait for weather that is colf enough to wrap up warm with a hot drink; there is a specific perspective on autumn and winter which is based on the concepts of nostalgia and cosiness, and a lot of us are so obsessed with these seasons. But how should you skincare change now that winter has well and truly entered the chat and winter skin seems to be a daily struggle? How should your self-care change during the colder months?

Let’s be honest, no one wants flaky, dry and dull skin over the Christmas period – do they? However, the tinted moisturiser and SPF that had your back during summer is not going to cut it for these winter months! Our skincare routine should be altered to match the drying, cold temperatures. With our complexions reacting differently to frostier temperatures, it is going to need all the nourishment and care it can get!

NOT SURE WHERE TO START OR WHAT PRODUCTS TO CHANGE? LOOK NO FURTHER – CAST YOUR EYE OVER OUR 9 TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN DURING WINTER!

1. Switch to a calming, hydrating cleanser💧

It is not uncommon for people to wear more heavy-duty makeup in the winter months (with all the festivities taking place!) so it is important to switch up the intensity of your cleanser. This will ensure that your skin is left squeaky clean and free from dirt and impurities. You should also opt got a more hydrating alternative, as a more nourishing formula will be able to provide rich moisture that winter skin will love.

2. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Buff away the dead skin! Exfoliation really is an essential step in winter skincare routines. By using a lightweight face scrub to chemical exfoliant once or twice a week, you will be able to buff away the dead skin cells that are hindering your inner glow, as well as boost moisture! Some of our favourites are the MicroDerm Polish by AlumierMD and the Exfoliating Polish by ZO Skin Health

3. Try a richer moisturiser/serum!

Using a moisturiser in your skincare routine goes without saying. Especially in the winter months, your skin needs deep moisture to maintain a smooth and plump skin texture – regardless of your skin type (everyone needs a moisturiser!).  A great serum will make the biggest difference when it comes to overhauling your complexion. Whether you are looking for a retinol serum or a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum, they can transform your skin’s quality and health. This is because serums are more likely to contain potent active ingredients through a lightweight formula; this means that they can deliver all that goodness deep into the skin.

4. Hydrate your eye area

During the colder, winter months, it is natural and often times, expected, for our underlies to feel dry to say the least. This is where investing in a good eye area comes in handy! We are all guilty of possibly skipping or forgetting about this step, but trust us when we say that caring about your eyes is just as important as any other part of your body – especially when it can slow down the ageing process and brighten up those under-eyes! You only need a light application of your eye product during your evening beauty regime and you will revitalise the delicate eye area and give your skin the hydration boost it needs at the same time.

5. Protect your lips too – invest in a good, moisturising & rich lip balm 💋

Due to the deadly combination of heaters and cold weather, keeping your pout perfectly plump can be a challenging task. This is why we suggest you have an intensive lip treatment on hand to get rid of cracked and dehydrated lips.

6. Utilise hydrating face masks!

As important as daily routine is, sometimes our skin might need more. That is where weekly, intensive face masks come in. Take advantage of hydrating and nourishing face masks that pour moisture back into dry, lifeless skin. Take a look at our Vie Aesthetics Sheet Masks and Vie Aesthetics Gold Eye Masks!

7. Do not put away your SPF!

Summer may feel like a distant memory but this does not mean that you can drop the SPF application from your winter skincare routine. It is true, the sun’s most harmful UV rays aren’t quite as strong in winter, but we promise, they are still there. So keep applying that sunscreen every time you go out to ensure your skin is health and protected all year round! Have a browse of our top SPF’s here!

PRESS PAUSE ON THESE PRODUCTS!

  1. Over-cleansing with foaming cleansers or electronic facial brushes can damage the skin barrier and parch the skin of crucial natural oils that it needs to protect and strengthen the skin barrier.
  2. Pull back on the big guns such as Vitamin C, Retinol or intensive peels if you feel that your skin is compromised from the colder temperatures!
  3. Do not use extremely intense, gritty facial scrubs; choose an exfoliator that is gentle and will not strip your skin of all your moisture and hydration.

LAYER UP YOUR SKINCARE – LAYERING IS CARING

Use multiple products to add an extra layer of protection. Moisturisers, SPF and serums can be used together as a part of a routine. You can think of your skincare the same way you do your clothing. You will need a skincare ‘wardrobe’ at this time of the year more than any other. Be mindful of what you are using but don’t be scared to add a few steps to your winter skin-routine to match the dry, dull climate of the winter months.
