Russian Lips: The hot new trend in lips treatments?

Lip augmentation with filler has always been a very popular treatment here at Vie Aesthetics. In these medical procedures, hyaluronic acid (HA) filler is used to enhance the shape or volume of the lips. It can address concerns such as unevenness, thinness, or a loss of volume, typically caused by ageing. You can even redefine your lips’ contours, creating a “cupid’s bow” desirable to you.

There is considerable artistry to lip augmentation. A skilled doctor has a lot of scope to craft results specific to a patient’s goals, while also ensuring a natural and long-lasting outcome. It is VITAL that these procedures are performed by a qualified doctor, of course – that I can’t stress enough.

However, it is on the subject of artistry that I wish to discuss a new craze that has taken the social media world by storm. If you’re active on Instagram or TikTok, then you may have already stumbled upon the beauty phenomenon known as “Russian Lips” and the hashtag #russianlips. If you haven’t, well, prepare to have your beauty antennae activated…

The term Russian Lips is derived from the style of lips you often see on Russian stacking dolls – or matryoshka and babushka, to give them their correct name. With Russian Lips, the cupid’s bow is accentuated to create something close to a heart shape. Volume and lift are added to the centre of the lips while remaining relatively flat to the face. The effect may be doll-like, but it looks very natural when the procedure is performed correctly.

The Russian Lips style has been popular in Russia, and the trend has spread to the rest of the world. In order to achieve the effect, the doctor administers the filler vertically into the lips. This is then spread outwards to widen and lift the lip shape. Much of the filler is also injected into the central area to create the accentuation you see in the Russian dolls/lips. The technique is a little different to a traditional lip filler procedure, which focuses more on injecting horizontally into the body of the lip.

Treatments require extra filler, but the main goal with Russian Lips is to heighten the lips rather than add excessive plumpness. For this reason, it’s often regarded as a good treatment for people new to lips treatments who want to create a striking look without being overly radical.

Of course, extra volume can be added if required and sessions are tailored to an individual’s desired result. However, we always strive for a 100% natural outcome, and we always advise the client if we think they are asking for too much product, and that their result will be unnatural. You should err on the side of caution with lips, and less is often more.

While the Russian Lips technique is unique in terms of the way filler is injected, there are other differences to consider. First is cost. In order to create the Russian Lips look, extra filler is often required compared to more traditional lip augmentation with filler treatments. Procedures can therefore take longer (usually between 30 and 45 minutes), and for these reasons, they tend to be a tad more expensive, too.

Secondly, because extra material is required, you should also anticipate longer lasting swelling or more prominent bruising. Fortunately, such after-effects should still begin to disappear after a few days, enabling you to get on with your usual activities without inhibitions. As with all treatments, our doctor will always discuss downtime with you beforehand and advise on the best possible aftercare regimen to follow.
