Peeling Skin: Everything You Need To Know

19-08-2022 | Posted in: Blogs, Skin Treatments, Wellness & Lifestyle

Desquamation, peeling skin, desquamating skin, or desquamation of skin are all terms used to describe a situation when the skin’s outer layer begins to regenerate. This frequently occurs when your skin is harmed, either by ailments or wounds. Peeling skin is typically not evident or a reason for alarm. In this blog post, you will learn everything about peeling skin and how to prevent it.

Why does sun burn cause skin to peel?
When our skin is overly exposed to the sun’s harmful UVB Rays, our skin begins to become overwhelmed by the damage that is being inflicted on it. In attempt to get rid of the damaged skin cells, our skin begins to peel- which is why if you do not take care of your skin in the sun you will notice peeling patches.

Why does dry skin make your skin peel?
When our skin is lacking in nourishment, it becomes dry and can peel. This is because, in a similar way to sunburn, the skin is removing all dead skin cells. External environmental factors are always taking a toll on our skin, whether it be too much sun exposure or not enough, we need to find a healthy balance so that our skin can continue its natural processes. When environmental factors irritate or damage our skin, they skin cells cannot continue their natural processes so much shed the dead skin as fast as possible. When our skin is dry and starts to peel, we are shedding dead skin cells in order to continue on the skin cycle.

How should you treat peeling skin?
When our skin is damaged by the sun it can become inflamed- that uncomfortable tight, hot feeling that might you get after a long day at the beach. This can be treated by having a cool shower or applying a cold towel to your sunburn. and re-hydrating your skin with the moisture that was absorbed by the sunburn.

The peeling can be treated by using antioxidant rich anti-inflammatory creams, typically those containing aloe vera are incredibly healing and soothing for the discomfort. Avoid oil-based products at all costs! These products can create a layer on the skin and trap the heat which can accelerate your discomfort as well as the peeling.

How can you prevent peeling skin?
Preventing sunburn is the best way to prevent your skin from peeling. Make sure you wear effective broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF; keep your face out of the sun; take breaks from sun exposure- especially when the sun is at its strongest during midday and re-hydrate your skin with nourishing moisturiser.

Keep your skin moisturised to seal in moisture but also ensure that you dry properly after being in the shower or swimming- these are other external factors can also affect your skin’s cycle and cause death of skin cells leading them to shed by peeling.
