The UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs Sustainable Development Goal 5, focusing on gender equality, sheds light on both victories and challenges. While we celebrate the decline in practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage, there’s still much ground to cover. Shockingly, there remain countries where husbands can legally prevent their wives from working, and domestic violence laws are still lacking in far too many places. And despite women’s increased presence in politics and the workforce, true parity remains a distant goal.
So, there is still a long way to go, and International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we’ve made, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the work that still lies ahead in achieving true gender equality.
