Self Love is on the Menu This Month

Happy Valentine's Day!

February is undeniably the month of LOVE. Whether for friends, family or someone special, this whole month is about spreading love, self-love included. After all, the most important relationship we have, is the one we have with ourselves. Expressing self-love is one of the most important things we can do for our mental wellbeing, and it can be practised in so many different ways. Showing gratitude for ourself and our personal accomplishments and holding ourself with the highest regard is a way of prioritising our own happiness.

Here are 5 tips to consider about practising self-love this month:

Take time for self-care

Have at least half an hour per day to do your skincare routine, take a bubble bath or watch your favourite TV show. Allowing some you-time dedicated to detaching yourself from the outside (and online) world can do you the world of good. This self-dedicated time will allow you to truly feel grateful for the present moment regardless of any external stress you might be experiencing. 

2. Think about your future and goals

Giving yourself personal goals to work towards will help you motivate yourself; whether it’s long-term goals or short quick ticks off your to-do list. Feeling that you’ve completed something for yourself, can provide the best sense of fulfilment and pride. This could be making your bed or buying your own house; something that only you can do for yourself.

3. Stop comparing yourself to others

All too often, people compare their achievements, looks and success to others but forget that there is only one and unique version of themselves and this is something to be celebrated! Comparing yourself to a version of somebody that you see online can dangerously impact your own mental health. In reality, people are not happy, successful or perfect 100% of the time, remember this when scrolling on Insta!

4. Release yourself from toxic relationships

Keeping toxic people in your life even when you know they are not bringing anything to the table in terms of friendship has got to stop! Show yourself some respect by cutting ties with the people who only act as a negative magnet in your life. The liberation and independence you will feel will be greater than, and incomparable to, any other proud moment you’ve felt.

5. Ask yourself "does it really matter?"

Don’t be so hard on yourself and take things with a pinch of salt by asking “does what he said really matter?”; “does their opinion really matter?”. On the greater scale of things, you cause yourself more stress by overthinking and caring about the little things, when you should be taking note of the bigger things.

Finally...

When our mental health suffers, our physical wellbeing will soon follow suit, so we should take care of our mind and it will take care of everything else. When we feel happy and content within ourself, we are more likely to succeed in other areas naturally and not as part of a carefully strategised plan to happiness. Self-love is the way forward, because as the famous saying goes “if you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else!” (RuPaul, 2014).
